Our story began on January 23, 2017, when six compassionate citizens came together in Hargeisa with a shared dream—to end the suffering of street animals. As the first registered animal welfare NGO in Somaliland, SAR-SERVICES was founded on the belief that kindness to animals is a moral and spiritual obligation. From feeding programs and rescues to policy advocacy and education, we’ve built a movement that is changing how animals are treated across the country.
Somali people have a long tradition of side by side living or harmonious coexistence with animals, deeply rooted in Islamic teachings and pastoral heritage. While misconceptions exist, Somali culture which is guided by Religious faith values like kindness to animals, recognizes the practical roles of dogs in herding, guarding, and companionship.
SAR-SERVICES Organization is the first Somaliland animal welfare organization for animals under direct human influence, which reveals suffering, rescues animals in need and protects them. The major objective of this organization is to advocate for a world where humans treat animals with respect, empathy and understanding. The organization opened the first ever sanctuary for rescued animals and homeless dogs in the country. We provide help and long-term solutions to the ever-growing stray dog population in major cities of Somaliland.
SAR-SERVICES Organization has been conducting feeding activities for stray dogs in Hargeisa in the past 6 years and major focus will be organizing sustainable campaigns and projects for companion animals including stray dogs and cats and other wild animals that encounter inappropriate conditions.
We are actively committed to the humane treatment of stray dogs and cats as well as to better keeping conditions for companion and farm animals. We will establish and operate sanctuaries in all other regions of Somaliland. We will also work with the ministry of environment and climate change to offer rescue services to wild animals rescued from abusive captivity or got injured in an appropriate home.
SAR-SERVICES Organization takes a problem-solving approach and offers animals in distress swift and direct aid. Our aim is to achieve and establish changes in politics, society and the economy that will benefit animals – through projects, campaigns and education. Our work is based on humanitarian aspects in which we will transform our societies attitudes and behavior towards kindness and support for stray animals. The organization will conduct animal population surveys and other scientific researches, local fund-raising and volunteerism initiatives, vaccinations, sterilizations and other animal researches and intensive national and international lobbying.
